Take screamo, post-hardcore, prog rock and a pinch of blues, mix all of them together and you’ll get La Dispute sound. The band hails from the Upper Midwest (US) and has a quite unique sound, which is really hard to incapsulate in one genre or influence.
Chad, Brad, Vass, Kevin and Jordan released ‘Wildlife’ last October, getting closer to the progressive rock, never abandoning the spoken (quite a quite a screamo approach). From the opener ‘A Departure’ we can get a really Shipping News-like sound, focusing on guitar, vocals and background drums. The work itself differs for the 12” ‘Never Come Undone’, in which the angry screams are replaced by a more neutral spoken word, concentrating more on the role of instruments. This release is more gloomy and melancholic, adding some bluesy tunes.
The same atmosphere is created in ‘ Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair’, going from some more contemplating songs (‘Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again’) to screamo and distorted guitars (‘Said the King to the River’) Quite interesting is also ‘Here Hear’, created by borrowing lyrics from other sources and then cutting, rearranged, and manipulating them to fit with the music itself. Going from some Escape the Fate to a more Boysetsfire-esque atmosphere, this can be quite a nice discovery for the post-hardcore/screamo appreciators. Check the tour schedule for next January below.
